Still Some Game Left

Some want us to think Obama has the Democratic party presidential nomination all sewn up. I figure this game is still very close.
Let me state from the beginning I am NOT a New York Times fan; never have been, don’t think I will ever be. My wife likes to read it so I always get it on Sunday. A story in the paper this morning has me chuckling a bit and just smiling at some points in the article.
The headline reads, “For Democrats Increased Fears Of A Long Fight”. The sub headlines read “SUPERDELEGATE SURVEY” and “Many Cite Will of Voters as Guiding Principle, in Boon to Obama”. Let me just say I don’t want any of those people coaching the basketball team I play on.
The part that is funny is that the superdelegates are mentioning the will of the voters. This is super funny to me. I wrote a blog several weeks ago about how the superdelegate thing all got started. Sometimes the will of people just is not the right! Back in 1972 George McGovern was the Democratic party presidential nominee. The people wanted McGovern. The party insider’s wanted Edmund Muskie. McGovern won one state. Something had to be done about the whole thing. Sometimes the people just don’t know. That’ why the superdelegate thing came about. Sometimes the will of the people has to be superseded.
So don’t think for a second the superdelegates are there to vote the way “the people” think they should vote. They vote for who they think will be the best candidate for the party in the election.
Besides if you look at the math, and the only math that counts here is delegate count the will of the people is not clear at all. I took the delegate counts mentioned in the paper and averaged them out. If you extrapolate that to a basketball game with about 10 minutes to go in the game I have Obama leading Hillary 47-43. According to the paper and many others Obama has this game well in hand.
That’s why I don’t want any of you coaching the team I play on. I’m just a steal and a layup then a three pointer from the lead in this game! Yet, you, as coach, want to pack it in. No way. This game is a long way from over.
Besides, Clinton has won all the big states that have a lot of electoral votes. Obama has won a majority of states where they have caucuses. I don’t know if any of you have noticed, but we don’t elect our President by voting in caucuses.
So this race is a long way from over. I am not playing on the team of any of the people ready to call it Obama’s game when we still have a lot of minutes to play in the game and I’m only a few points behind.
