With American reporters being doled out 12-year sentences as spies despite their affiliations as part of the press corps, perhaps it is time for the major networks to create Survivor: North Korea. Is this paranoia on behalf of the radical government or an attempt to show the world it has authority over its domain?
If the measure of a man is his political savvy and not his height, well never mind, that is a bad example for Kim Jong-is-Ill. If the measure of a man be his legacy, perhaps this troubled leader will be forever remembered as the man who started the end. There are Mayan calendars, Nostradamus writings, Hebrew Scriptures and various other end-of-days theories that may very well point to his reign. In fact, the irony is that journalists of other eras were responsible for the writings and now he feels the need to jail them.
In a bizarre twist of events, these “spies” were not only held without the ability for international negotiation or representation, but they were tried and convicted. Smartly, they were not sentenced to death despite that being the normal sentence for international espionage in North Korea. Instead, a 12 year sentence was given. Can this be viewed as a weakness? Perhaps as a call for help? Or maybe even just a political move securing prisoners?
No matter what the rationale, this is not wartime, there are no benefits to any country in the world taking over North Korea except for South Korea. So why would they pick on the big boys at the big boys table? In this political chess game where only the bad guys who think we are still involved with the Bay of Pigs want to use nukes as bishops on the board, when does the world stand up and say “enough?”
