This kind of hate toward the president is no joke. Even on the right-wing Fox "News" Shep Smith was talking about how scary his email is getting and how short a step it is from that kind of fear and anger to picking up a gun. And if people really believe he's like Hitler, would it be a surprise if they tried to kill him or his supporters?

Lets see if most of you can make it all the way through this post; ill try to go slow. I believe you are concentrating on the "harms" of fascism based on your experience with the subject. (world history, WW2) However just as we never actually saw communism (we actually saw a form of statism (China, Bolsheviks, Soviet union)) we never saw actual fascism (a little beside the point). You've just used the oldest smokescreen debate tactic in the book, congratulations. After reading the responses i've come to the conclusion that I always come to on a site like this; most of you don't really understand the political spectrum. This paradigm of "liberal" left and conservative right is a misnomer put in place for your amusement and I can prove it, keep reading. This old tired paradigm is based on the extremely selective political atmosphere that has existed through ALL of American political history. To premise the USA IS NOT A DEMOCRACY. It never was and hopefully never will be. Here's why, the ACTUAL political spectrum is absolute governmental power on the left to no power on the right in descending order. Good example: Dictatorship, oligarchy, democracy, republic, collective, anarchy. What we are now is an oligarchy, this is NOT disputable (try if you wish, but I warn I DO know what im talking about based on research not opinion or upbringing like most of the comments on here). Those of you who think we are not are obviously little traveled and little read. When you fully understand the concept then you'll see how actual change can be achieved, and why this article and following comments are hilarious and superfluous. To open your minds up a little go read the "doors of perception." Just as you probably cant understand the perceptive screen of being a Muslim, most of you are having trouble looking past your own opinions. Try to take anothers point of view with scientific, empathetic and sterile attitude and you'll see your own ideas and beliefs refined and strengthened (or often change). While anothers beliefs to you are maybe backward or wrong, to condemn them outright is to be a fool and in all honesty that's what wrong with this country. Its obvious that most of you have been raised on and fed too much television. (Most every channel on cable, satellite, newpapers and mainstream newsites are owned either by Reuters or AP and has been since the late 1890's.(Both outlets are owned by the same people)) Before you panic, dont worry there are some out there who understand these subjects enough to form educated opinions. (Most of them are Libertarians lol)

Once again, Texas Slim's articulate prose points out that which is not (unfortunately) common knowledge by informing the reader that the origins of the Tea Party dealt with "Taxation WITHOUT Representation". Interestingly enough, our elected leaders were just that...elected! Once elected by the people for the people, I believe that we are, in fact, represented. The author has basically stated that while the right to protest is alive and strong in our community, as it should be, there seems to be a serious disconnect in some pertinent factual information.

As Texas Slim points out, the majority of those protesting APPEARED to be that of the population who would be receiving a tax cut, yet, the common protest was that of unfair taxation. Interestingly enough, once this was pointed out to the "Teabaggers", a common argument was then turned to that of the current budget, suggesting that this is the "real" reason for the protest. Unfortunately, the budget currently set has yet to show a profound effect on the taxation of the protesters. While I am not suggesting that it may not at some point, I feel it to be more appropriate to protest an act once the act has, or is definitely about to, happen!

In regards to the fascism argument, when looking specifically at the structure of fascism, I found it laughable how this argument is actually taking place, especially after all of the events of the last administration that took place. Comparing the two administrations in regards to fascism is so ridiculous that this would best be saved for another article at another time. We can only hope that Texas Slim could present another well written piece diving in head first to educate those who seek that which (again) should be common knowledge.

Nice work, Slim.
The author's right - if you look at what fascists really did and believed, there's nothing like it in the Obama administration, but the Bush administration did lots of things that looked like it.

And seriously, I think half the commenters didn't actually read the whole article - where is there any mention of racism in the article? I had to re-read it and still didn't find anything like that. The main points seem to be:

1) Teabaggers protest taxation without representation, but they do have representation

2) Teabaggers protest tax hikes, but most of them got tax cuts from Obama

3) Teabaggers protest fascism, but the Bush administration was WAY more fascist.

Maybe they should protest the fact that they never learned to read.

Wow- um- I think your opinion is clearly expressed, this article makes some great points-the biggest being that accusations of fascism are melodramatic.

Notice that none of these people has anything of substance to say- just ad hominem attacks.
You're like: "hey, fascism is usually about nationalism, but Obama isn't nationalistic."
And they're like: "you commie pinko! You are what's wrong with America."
There is not one mention of racism in this article- methinks y'all doth protest too much

Hey Jonathon Davis:

Where in this article does the author ever level the charge of "racism"?

What he does, and quite handily, is show that everything these Tea Party protesters are supposedly challenging was actually rampant in the Bush Admiministration and is diminishing with the current administration.

What is wrong with you people who keep whining about being called "racists" when no one is calling *anyone* racist? Talk about ignorant!

Jonathon--pay attention to the article and challenge the facts in it, and quit relying on hot-button words like "racist"--you and your fellow apparently imbecilic commentaters are the only ones throwing that word around...

I do think it's a hoot that you call out MSNBC but blithely ignore Fox's Cody Willard throwing around words like "fascism" (what an idiot!) and CNBC's Rick Santelli's utterly ridiculous rant that began this whole thing with the tea bags. So pathetic. I love it when Santelli tries to say that he's surrounded by a cross-section of America--he's standing on a trading-room floor!

And I love how he and all the rest of you whine about this bailout that's actually not helping the homeowenrs--it's helping banks and mortgage companies; c'mon, isn't that he way you like it? Money for those who already have it, while the rest suffer and struggle?

I must agree, another crap article. If anyone disagrees with the way the country is going, they must surely be racists. How absurd. During the 60's and 70's anyone who didn't agree with the administration, they were labeled Communists and Fascists. Since the 80's, the keyword to call someone you don't agree with is racist.

If you don't agree, you must be a racist. Do you not understand how ignorant that is? I'm sure wasting as much money on the stimulus bill as the entire war in Iraq costs to date had nothing to do with it. The largest budget in history has nothing to do with it either. Nor does continuing to send money to foreign countries while Americans continue to lose jobs must not mean anything.

The problem with this country is people like you. Grown men tell their kids that they shouldn't believe everything they see on television while they consciously do it themselves. MSNBC said the protests were racist, and you parrot what you see on television. A whole country full of people who are unread and tv-fed.

Hey Joe--

Where in this article does the author make the claim that the protesters are "a bunch of misguided ignorant racist Republicans expressing their anger at having lost the White House to an African."?

I have read this piece again and again, and I cannot find this text anywhere... Funny thing about debate--it works best when you make arguments that are grounded in facts and reality.

Oh, and by the way, Barack Obama is an African-AMERICAN, not an African, and his mother was white, as were the grand-parents who raised him. I mean, you know that, right?

Oh, and as for you, Vickie, and even you, underperforming Andy--your debate skills could really use some polishing, as well! Or are you only comfortable making provocative statements with no basis in fact?

Honestly, this is worse than kids on a playground.

Here's what *I* found compelling in this piece--how easy it is to find parallels between the Bush regime and fascism and how utterly revolting it is that pathetic twits like Cody Willard and Rick Santelli need only shout a few catch-phrases in order to work a whole bunch of misguided people into a frothy-mouthed, tea bag dumping frenzy.

Oh, and the commentaters here, thus far, kind of prove my last point...

Na nana nana na
