Gangland wars, murders and shootings are rampant on the streets of Syracuse, New York.
It happened again on the mean inner city streets of Syracuse, New York. Little 20 month old Rashaad Walker, Jr., strapped in his car seat in the rear of a minivan with his 19 year old father and the father’s 17 year old girlfriend, was shot to death on a Sunday afternoon.

The shooting death is yet another reminder of the violence that surrounds gangs and their apparent lack of conscious, guilt or moral fiber. These gangs have no sense of decency and their only code of honor is killing, shooting, robbing, threatening or just plain terrorizing and entire area of a city that is falling victim to their grasp of power. “No,” Rashaad, Jr. wasn’t the intended target. Rather, it was Rashaad, Sr. a 19 year old gang member of the 110 Gang. It was an act of revenge for a shooting that had wounded two other opposing gang members just a couple of nights prior. Syracuse police have arrested and charged 21 year old Saquan Evans, a member of the Bricktown Gang with the toddler’s murder.
According to 2008 data the city of Syracuse has a population of approximately 138,500, with a median household income of $30,879 and roughly 30% of the residents live in poverty. As you exit Interstate 81 at Adams Street you unwittingly are entering the turf of the Bricktown Gang. Their area of control covers a very large section of the south side almost touching downtown Syracuse proper. The lower south side is turf to the 110 Gang and their area involves several city blocks, both commercial and residential. People live in constant fear in these two areas. Children can’t play outside and no one is immune from stray bullets hitting their residences.

Then on Thursday of this week there was another senseless death at the hands of a gang style murder. A local high school graduate with a stellar record in basketball and football fell victim to a drive-by shooting as he rode in a car on Interstate 81 with some known gang members. Kihary Blue age 19 was not a member of a gang. Rather, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Kihary was planning on attending a college near Rochester, New York in January. His death and the wounding of a passenger in the car with him is what prompted the shooting death of Rashaad Walker, Jr.

Two gangs and two deaths within the course of one week. On Halloween four people were shot while trick or treating. The following week saw four more 17 to 20 year olds injured during a shooting while they were playing cards. A week later a neighborhood was holding an anti violence rally when more gunshots rang out.
When, where and how do you stop this mentality of brutality? I don’t know. I’m not a psychologist, criminologist or sociologist. I’m simply a writer and a story teller and I’m telling all who will listen that drastic changes need to be made.

I wouldnt have a single qualm if the bullets hit their intended targets namely other gang members. Let them cancel each other out.
On second thought, they are also, to a certain degree also victims. we as a society have to hold oursevles accountable for not creating a safe and equitable environment for peoples of all race, creed, or socio-economic standing.
THIS is why I feel so strongly about the world needing Divine intervention. Our collective descent into madness has gone on too long for us to be able to rectify the situation with some mealy mouthed self serving politicians and corrupted officials.
Only God can bring about real, love based and lasting change.
GREAT post.
The deadliest creature in the world is Man Kind. No other creature kills for no other reason than the joy of killing. Our streets are over run with gangs killing one another. The tragedy are the innocents caught in the middle.
Promising lives ended, for what? Revenge?
Animals walk on two legs, not four.
I agree something needs to be done. It cannot be solved with money alone. It take a committed society to address this problem. We do not need more warehouse to keep people. We need more program to provided them a chance for success. Yes it might cost a little more money. Do you pay me now or pay me later? A problem not address does not go away.
A sad day when it is the young, and innocent who pay with their lives, for these senseless killers… a good share cheers
That was very tragic. My heart aches with the child for he is innocent. I pity those people who have chosen the wrong ideals. Too many lives were lost and wasted for a wrong cause.
nice share………thanks
What a tragedy. It’s also terrible. Hope people can be more reasonable and stop all the violence. Thanks for sharing.
There is no discipline amongst the youth of today, no respect for others. Until people learn to live by the rules of society and not by their little select group or gang this problem sadly will persist.
The jails, when they are caught are not strict enough for the persistant or serious offenders
Too many single mothers raising five or six children on the welfare system we created here in America that is sucking the life out of tax-payers. Why would our government continue to allow these sorry women who have never been married, to keep having baby after baby to raise on welfare without a father, and who are destined to join street gangs because this is the only family they have ever known. Our government has created this mess, but have never taken steps to solve their own problems. Now our city streets are no longer safe, and our prisons are overfilled. This terrible event you wrote about is a constant reminder to us citizens, that something has to be done by our government, or our great nation will be destroyed within, without a single shot being fired at us from another nation. Well done friend.
awesome
Great!
An eye-opener. So much violence is happening in all parts of the globe and we are all responsible one way or the other. The problems of the world are so intertwined, one problem leads to another. But we can do something right where we are. Let peace begin with us. Universal Peace starts with “U”.
Very good post. It is sad. Our streets are filled with so much violence. It reminds me of Iraq with the lack of American concern.
Like I have told Mystical White Wolf many times, humans are the only ones which kill for no good reason. My heart goes out to all ,which suffer this kind of violence. Great article my friend!
Such a sad and tragic story.
nice share.
That is just terrible. When will people stop being so angry and violent?
Full employment might be a good start, and some tough love.
Very tough love.
violence sees no gender nor age. Its a pity that innocent ones got caught in this brutal acts. Hope, these hoodlums rot in jails.
When rats were put into a situation of overpopulation they started eating each other.
This is the same thing.

What a sad, eye opening story.
This is such a tragedy.
Poor baby. This is sad. We all make this world better by our individual decisions and actions every day.
I couldn’t agree more. Senseless.
What a tragedy. So sad.
An unfortunate incident. It is too easy for teens to acquire guns.
Good share!
