The Leadership Solution

When we feel frustrated with the way things are going in our country we tend to criticize the government, in particular the president.
And there is nothing wrong in that by it self, for we all look up to the government for leadership and we expect things to work in a particular way. Obviously when things don’t work out the way they should, we point fingers at the government. Few of us though try to understand the reason behind why things are the way they are and in fact few offer solutions to the dilemma. This I tend to believe is because most of us don’t know what to do but we expect the government to know.
When a country is in trouble, God looks for a leader. We must realize that when leaders disqualify themselves for their positions, God has already been searching for someone else. A good example is that of King Saul who was disobedient to God because he was a people pleaser. When God rejected him through Prophet Samuel, He said” You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time. But now your kingdom will not endure: the lord has sought out a man after His own heart and appointed him leader over his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command” 1 Samuel 13:13-14.
Addressing Prophet Jeremiah, God asks him to “go up and down the streets of Jerusalem, look around and consider, search through her squares. If you can find but one person who deals honestly and seeks the truth, I will forgive this city.” Jeremiah 5:1. In reality God was looking for a leader to stand in the gap for the people. He was looking for a person who dealt honestly, a trait hard to come by today. Secondly God was also looking for a person who spoke the truth. This is also another quality that is hard to come by in our contemporary society. In one of his writings, Dr Myles Munroe avers that the political system we live in is “somewhat contrary to the truth”. He suggests that it is difficult to tell the truth in a democracy. “If you want to be elected in a democratic system, the truth can hinder your votes. Political leaders often neglect to tell the truth because people want you to tell them what they want to hear”.
I tend to agree with this view as it is clearly demonstrated in our society today. How do some leaders become so popular when we know little of their development and leadership record? Because they tell people what they want to hear through lies and innuendos. They make people identify an enemy to explain their misery and people buy into these lies because it makes them feel better about themselves. They promise things that we all know they cannot achieve but people want to hear these things and as result such leaders win the people’s votes.
There is a saying that honesty is the best policy. According to Dr Munroe, “if honesty is the best policy, you are dishonest. Honesty is the only policy. It is not the best of choice over a variety of choices; it is the only choice. Honesty must be the only choice for a leader”. Only God can give a leader wisdom to govern and direction on how to act in a particular situation. The answer to struggle and chaos, whether national or personal, is God ordained leadership.
