In the news again another Old time vs. Present guard conflict surfaced concerning the National Football League (NFL). Simply, the old time players want money from the rights of merchandising that they are included in.
This goes hand in hand with the basic disregard for upgrading health benefits and disability for former players. It all reminds us the bottom line is sports are a big entertainment business. The emphasis is on the big and the business. The players are people which are plug and play parts that you upgrade as needed.
Contemporary business etiquette
In business, you could have been the companies biggest asset for twenty years. You could have even been the motor that drove the engine. In the good times you were the money player for the business team. After everything is said and done, it comes down to what have you for me done lately? Sports are no different. Once you are out the door, the emphasis is on the out. The loyalty ends when the need for you ends. Yes, you should be proud to be a piece of the heritage, just don’t ask for compensation.
Sports are a business concept anomaly
As much as the product changes, the game remains deeply entrenched in its tradition. The tradition is a source of constant major revenue. As technology advances and new money generating resources are developed, the old timers generally see no compensation. The sad part is many of those who are called the proud traditions of the past never had the shot at the financial excesses endowed on the players of today. Yet, for their sport, their names still generate income.
The latest
A suit asking for the profits associated with former players has been asked by the NFL to be dismissed. I agree it should be. The lawsuit should have never been. A league that touts itself highly on tradition should reward those part of it. In retrospect, the money spent in court alone will exceed any money awards given. The only winners will be the lawyers. Just out of plain decency, if you say you take pride in your tradition, you should share in the profit you reap from it.
Time for the worker to step up
In business and sport they need you until they don’t anymore. When things are going well, who sees the greatest reward? I have yet to see the nuts and bolts worker that has a mansion on the hill and four or five cars in the garage. Usually if they do have the four or five cars they are not of the luxury type with three or four are in need of repair. When things go bad in business, we know who is it is that pays the price. Of course, the CEO is fired or asked to step down. Accepting responsibility usual goes hand and hand with a multi-million dollar compensation package. You know the scenario. This fallen leader is forced to go home and recuperate on the French Rivera. The choice of whether it’s with spouse, otherwise or both is at their option. Now, the workers that CEO caused to be laid off get a good shot at unemployment insurance and a health insurance cobra package they cannot afford to pay. It is time to step back and consider adding different strokes to that overall picture.
Where to start changing the attitude?
Supporting the former players is a start. After all, you supply the funds that make the league owners wealthy. Don’t stop there. This “business attitude” extends to our elderly. By the way, that will be us someday. Begin with the NFL Hall of Shame and grow the mentality. Once you have taken a stand, you’ve taken “Initiative.” Initiative changes people and the quality of life. Initiative is taking the first step.
