Op/Ed on U.S decision to moth ball missile defense.

The United States announced today that the plans drawn up for a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe is to be moth balled.  The plan, initially developed to counter Iran in their attempt to develop inter-continental ballistic missile, met much resistance from the Russian Federation.  The Russian’s view this as a clear and distinct victory.

The Russian Federation declared the withdrawal a wise and thoughtful move.  The United States is working hard to strengthen her relationship with Russia.  The other strategically important countries in the area are also taking note of this move.

Relations with Russia have often been a cat’s cradle of blind corners and dark alleys.  Between the wars in Chechnya, the Ossetia and Caucus mountain areas, the Russians have their hands full already.  This of course does not include all of Russia’s neighbors, but things are tense in the region to say the least.

The warmer and fuzzier we get with the Russians the better.  They have some of the most determined, well trained, and experienced military personnel on the planet.  Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian President praised the move as helping to stabilize the region.

The United States declared that there would be no need for the defense shield.  Instead of a fixed-base operation, the U.S. will be utilizing Navy warships, submarines and naval aircraft, to include the United States Marine Corps.  This works out to being a sea-based missile defense shield, but it is acceptable to the Russian Federation.

The United States helped solidify her relationship with Russia in a very profound way.  If we keep pushing the right buttons as we have been with the Russians, maybe we can get them to tag along for another adventure in Afghanistan, and Pakistan and Somalia…etc.
