As The Jungle is finally demolished, we learn those living there were selling children, as young as nine, to be used as sex-slaves. What won’t people do to get into the UK?

Last week saw the long-awaited destruction of an immigration camp known as “The Jungle.” The rat-infested camp was home to hundreds of illegal immigrants, all waiting to pay the fee of around £3,000 each to be smuggled into the UK, from their make-shift home in Calais, France. Until recently, the French government had been openly handing out leaflets explaining how to claim asylum in the UK, and how the UK benefits systems works – thus, encouraging the influx. Recently, after much pleading, an agreement was made with the UK that this active encouragement would to come to and end, and the camp would be destroyed. Of course, the real reason the French finally acted may be because the residents of Calais had also complained, saying the camp was the cause of rising crime rates in the area, and would devalue their properties.

The filthy, squalid camp was stormed by hundreds of French police officers in an operation intended to halt the continuous procession of illegal immigrants entering the United Kingdom on a daily basis – often smuggled in by our own truck-drivers – and posing a threat to national security and social welfare. Bulldozers were brought in to flatten the entire compound, disabling the smuggling operation for good.

However, the leader of the operation – who alone claims to have smuggled at least 2,000 immigrants into the UK – was later to tell an under-cover News of The World reporter he was still in the Calais area, and ready to smuggle more illegals across the border to the UK, for increasingly extortionate amounts. For £4,000, he claimed he could provide 1st class travel, in the cab of a lorry, with a driver who would “make you feel comfortable.”
The number of men arrested in the raid totalled nearly three hundred, most of whom were Afghans. Nearly all have since been released on the grounds of – yes, you’ve guessed it – Human Rights. What a surprise…

Government officials have admitted they have no idea how many illegal immigrants may be resident in the UK, and no way of determining the true figure. Labour have been slow to even admit there is a problem with illegal immigration, but the recession and coming election have brought the issue to light. In truth, this situation should have been dealt with years ago.

Those found living in The Jungle were mainly male, but there were also women and children. Toddlers as young as three had been discovered, and it’s recently come to the attention of French authorities that children as young as nine are being sold to truck-drivers, as sex slaves. It is claimed that while these truck-drivers are abusing the poor children in their cabs, illegal immigrants are sneaking into their lorries and making their way, across the channel, to the UK.

Who exactly is selling these children – their parents? Why would they be doing so? I would suggest it’s to pay for their incredibly expensive transport to the UK. Or are these children being taken from their parents, against their will, by others – such as those running the smuggling racket? Whatever the horrific answer may be, the French need to ensure they deal with the situation quickly, and effectively. Moving the immigrants on to a location outside the town of Calais, or dividing the camp into smaller settlements simply isn’t going to work. Of course, the British government need to work with them, as has been made clear by the Mayor of Calais, who has openly criticised the inability of the British to defend their own borders.
If this camp had been closed years ago, when it first appeared, and the reasons immigrants headed this way had been addressed and resolved by the government, the UK would have tens of thousands less illegal immigrants to deal with, and these poor, innocent children would be safely in the hands of their parents, instead of in the clutches of twisted paedophiles.

*UPDATE* – The vast majority of those arrested in Calais have been or are about to be flown back to Afghanistan, at the cost of the British and the French. They will also be handed a gift of £1,900 EACH to take with them, along with the promise of free training once home. Of course, there’s nothing to stop them returning to France again, if they’re that desperate and determined to reach the UK. And if selling their children as sex slaves doesn’t prove these people are desperate, then I don’t know what would…
In which case, it wouldn’t surprise me if they were simply paid once again, flown home once again (at our expense, once again), for the cycle to begin… once again. How long can we, in the grip of a recession, afford to continue this form of blackmail? Shouldn’t governments be capable of enforcing regulations by other means?

never heard of it…
sadly what I do know about child sex slavery is that the parents often know and play a part but live in denial. In some impoverished nations parents sell their daughters and although they are told their kids will be working in factories they must on some level know the truth and yet force themselves not to think of it. I think the same is true here… the parents know and yet do not think about it. They see it as a means of survial.
a very sad situation and one that does need to be addressed.
Well researched one to share..
@B Nelson – I think you’re right. It’s just so incomprehensible…
@martie – Yes, it does, but I don’t think that will happen. The men they arrested and released won’t give up; they know where they will get the best treatment and highest pay-outs. Everyone does: the UK. Until we change our policy it will remain like this, but we can’t change anything because of the human rights bill. What a bloody mess.
This is so sad just as child sex slavery throughout the world is. The people who are so concerned with human rights for the adults don’t seem to have the same concern for the children that are being so abused. Human rights organization are siding with child rapists in Poland now that Poland passed a law requiring chemical castration for child rapists. I guess the poor victimized children don’t deserve the basic human right not to be brutilized by these pedaphiles. What is wrong with these so called “Human rights” activists? Are they all pro child rape?
@Jamie Myles – I’m with you 100%. Something has to be done about this crazy act. They need to close all the loopholes, and fast. Paedophiles, along with all those convicted of serious crime, don’t deserve any human rights.
The world is the play ground of the rich and wealthy. Their companies can move around freely to do business in other places all over the world. It is only the little people who do not have the freedom to move about where ever they would wish.
@Leonardo davinci Evans – But there has to be some control, or otherwise everyone will head in the same direction (as they are currently doing: the UK) and it will be impossible for that place to support them (as it already is). A general free-for-all could never work.
Extremely well presented article. I found it quite disturbing but have read before how these things go on. It makes me shudder for these children and families, how can that life be better?
It works for the rich and wealthy! And where is the control over the non-liveable wages their factories pay as they freely move around to take unfair advantage of people living in poverty? The rich and the wealthy head in the same directions. At some point is will be impossible for that place to support them when those they arrange to take advantage of are crushed by the weight of what they have arranged to take advantage of them.
Your point about minimum wages is absolutely correct, it’s the reason so many people refuse to work here in the UK – they are truly better off on state benefits. But your comparison with the rich and wealthy is silly. The rich and wealthy move around and pay for their needs. England cannot support the entire Afghan nation, the same way we can’t support the Poles or anyone else. This isn’t an argument for a or against capitalism. This is about immigration, and it can’t be dealt with idealistically. Any country can only house and cope with so many new residents, and we’re a small, over-crowded island, in the midst of a recession. UK residents can’t get adequate housing for their needs, yet those from other countries come here and get their needs met. Asylum seekers and travelers actually come above any British-born citizen when it comes to housing needs. This situation is not right…
I’m not actually prejudiced against one being rich or wealthy, but some new limits must be set in the coming world. Where being rich is not a license to be in a position to take advantage of others politically, economically, or otherwise. For example, politically and economically immigration is not a problem when outside workers are needed to undercut the economic justice that natives are suddenly requiring or when specialized positions salaries are paying so well that it is realized they can be undercut by bringing in outsiders who will be paid less.
