What needs to change about welfare, from a first person point of view.

Welfare does need to change, there is no denying that. I receive government assistance but that doesn’t mean I am sitting around doing nothing like most people believe. The sad truth is that I do see some people in the programs I have been in that do act like the stereotypical welfare recipient. Then there are some like the woman with 14 kids that are in denial of the fact they receive government assistance. She claims food stamps which judging by the amount of children she has is a pretty hefty amount is not associated with welfare. Food stamps are considered part of welfare.

People like that make it worse for people like me who want to finish some of the schooling so we can obtain a stable job. I say some of schooling because this woman’s excuse is she needs to finish her masters degree. What happened to the associates and bachelors degree you need to get on the way. I want to go to med school but I understand that i can get degree’s on the way that will allow me to support my family. I have a year left to get my associates and I will have many stable job opportunities. They need to make people use the degree’s that they have.

Also this woman claims to have back injuries from work yet she opted to carry six babies, which turned to be eight. I have two kids and only carried one at a time, that is killer on the back. So if she is healthy enough to carry eight kids than she can work.

There are two things that bother me the most. The first being the people that complain they do not get enough from welfare and that they can not achieve any sort of financial independence because welfare won’t just go out and buy them things like cars or houses. Take a little responsibility for the life you lead, please.

The other one are the people that post on sites like Craig’s list and talk about how only Spanish people receive welfare. That we deserve to be poor and should be forced to buy the cheapest and dirtiest things. I do not know what extravagant lifestyle you thing welfare recipients lead but let me assure you we do that already. I give up the extras of life for children already. After the bills get paid, diapers are bought and any extra food expenses are met there is nothing left to go out and buy this lobster you claim i eat. Ignorance and stereotyping is wrong for any race and any religion why haven’t we learned that yet?

We need to create a society where welfare is not needed at all. Simply cutting thousands off would just create more of an economic disaster.  Just look at the saying, “Give a man a fish he eats for a day, teach a man to fish he eats for a life time.”
