The one-term president is now speaking out saying the discontent in the nation is all based on Mr. Obama’s race. Who really cares what Jimmy Carter thinks anyway?
Former president Jimmy Carter made the following statement:
“I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he’s African American,” Carter said. “I live in the South, and I’ve seen the South come a long way and I’ve seen the rest of the country that shared the South’s attitude toward minority groups at that time … and I think it’s bubbled up to the surface, because of a belief among many white people, not just in the South but around the country, that African-Americans are not qualified to lead this great country.”
Arguably the least successful president in modern times, Carter is making comments that seem to have no basis in fact. The very fact that we have a black man who was elected president (ie, got more votes than the white guy he was running against) expose Carter’s statement as false in my opinion. And honestly, what good can incendiary remarks, without any basis, like this do? None.
The one-term president doesn’t seem to be in tune with the citizens of this country. I don’t think he was when he was president and he certainly isn’t now. If you write a book that is on the recommended reading list of the world’s top terrorist (Bin Laden) then that is a pretty good indicator something isn’t right, don’t you think? And Mr. Carter seems to forget that the former leader of the Senate, Robert Byrd, is not only a supporter of the current president and endorsed him but also a former member of the Ku Klux Klan.
Jimmy Carter wasn’t relevant during his administration. He certainly is no more so today. Great strides have been made in the United States in civil rights and race relations. The former president should put a lid on his opinion before he causes more dissension and a greater divide among this nation.

He didn’t say it was a large slither of the populace. He’s suggesting that there are small elements of of the opposition who’s gripes with Obama are racially based. I agree with that. I’ve felt that way since the ridiculous “Birther Movement”
Again, I don’t think it’s a majority of the country at all. But racism exists.
Apparently a lot of people care what Carter thinks. Every media organization has posted this story.
I live and GA and we are not racist Rednecks. We are intelligent and make well informed decisions. I didn’t even realize that Obama was black. I thought he had a white mother and was raised by his white grandmother. He plays the race card when it suits him.

No, we don’t care what Carter thinks.
May be it is as president Carter said. He was only one term but his legacy will be remember forever. Is it anyone here that argue racism is no more an issue here in America?
Obama didn’t play the race card- Carter said this. The White House has said that Carter was wrong.
Anyway, nice article.
Obama is the better man. Hell, -its not a ‘black’ issue… Rev. Jesse Jackson when he ran for the Office of President failed to carry even ONE state, -not even his HOME state! He lost, he lost bigtime. Obama however, won and people want him for President. We want the change he brings. Carter can go grow some peanuts and build houses for humanity and hush his aged op/ed opinions already. The only reason he was voted in was because we were sick of Nixon and his ilk. Gerald Ford came after Nixon of course, -a man that nobody voted for and doggone it, he pardoned Nixon for ALL his crimes committed while in office and he was therefore as bad a politician as Nixon…
It’s true, Wilson is a bigot without realizing it. But Carter would his family back ground tell you unlike certain whiltes in certain section of Southern states, work or being around blacks to understand bigotry.
Wilson, hadn’t had to many blacks from his days as a youth, in government in Carolina, say different. His son said he’s not. But partial bigots only speak around bigots who will listen at the little black comment.
One term president wasn’t a good put down. If you consider eight years of stupidity before Obama, who all whites are expecting him to fix a eight year mess.
where’s the logic? and he ran on change and that burning people up more because he pushing your state leader, my state leader, by saying if you just here in washington d.c it’s time to earn your raises that they are quick to give even if the country is hurting.
Challenge yourself at the library or internet research the great, great, great, great, benefits that the political leaders receive compare to the legal poor, legal poor. While everyone picking on the illegals is a joke to the legal poor people of America.
It seems to me that the author is not being partisan but declaring that the ex-president is fanning a fire or fueling it. JC needs to go back to his peanuts and leave the situation alone!
I was very young when he was president, but I think he was one of the worst in history. He was not prepared for the job, I feel this way about our present President, I think he would have done better 4 years from now.
Damage is done.
You wrote a great article
Carter is a buffoon who should just be quiet. His books on the Mideast are based upon distortions and half truths. His ego has gotten the better of him and he can’t stand to be out of the lime light.
Really one term president seems to be more an evaluation of the prsidency than a put down. George HW was a one-termer, too, and that speaks toward the job he did, too, in my opinion.
Was this pronouncement by Carter an attempt to be relevant, to appear competent? I joined the army while Carter was in the process of embarassing our country with his handling of the Iran hostage crisis… More of the same here… What a clown.
