Climate change policy and the role of the U.S.

This question looms over our heads as heads of other countries try to persuade American to offer leadership on climate control. Why are these countries and international institutions looking at the U.S. once again for a solution? So, they have someone to blame when something, anything, goes wrong. This is an art the U.S. has failed to master.

Saving face and risking a one’s reputation is not America’s strong suits which are what the rest of the world banks on. By taking the lead on addressing the negative effects of climate change, America is opening itself to a panacea of skeptics sitting around waiting and watching America’s to screw up. The skeptics will offer harsh critiques with no prescription to solve the problem at hand. The success of a climate change policy limiting a country’s ability to pollute, is not based on the U.S. support. Instead, it will be based on countries solving their own problems on their own turf. A blanket call to standardize emission levels is not a feasible solution since countries have different economic needs and resources at their disposal. A government trying to profit from imposing taxes on companies violating emission levels, is a cry that capitalist and laissez free economies need to be careful about when endorsing.
