I was asked this question in a blog, and this is my Post, modified and corrected.

In my opinion the politics of division, the much-promoted and heartfelt political positions of liberals vs conservatives, is the root of the problem. You and I as neighbors and friends, even, might be different; different philosophies, different political parties.

But, in the backyard over a beer, for the most part we can be civil, engaging, and go home friends; vote our beliefs.

Another part of the problem seems to be that no matter who “controls” the government and legislatures (Geez, all this time I thought we, the Citizens did), we as a society don’t seem to see the kinds of improvements we want, maybe even need.

Liberals: not enough benefits and programs for poor, not enough regulation, government management.

Conservatives,: government too big, too much taxation, too many dis-incentives for business, which inhibits jobs.

  You get the point?

Reconciling these opposing viewpoints is probably impossible.

Americans only truly come together in the face of an external or society-wide crisis.

Right now, our progress towards socialism seems assured.

Conservative are now outnumbered by Liberals, so expect more of the same.

The thing I find disconcerting is that the liberals want, through taxation, the conservatives, who mostly earn the money, to pay for all these programs.

I’d like to see an Annual Tax Bill, where those who support those programs are responsible for a line item tax payment to support them.

Then, we might see a different outcome. It’s easy to legislate and posture using OPM (Other People’s Money). I wonder what the message would be if those who want these programs had to write an individual check (tax deductible?) to support them.

America was founded on individual responsibility and opportunity.

See Declaration Of Independence -http://www.ushistory.org/declaration/document/index.htm, and the

Constitution -http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/charters/constitution.html

We seem to have lost that guiding philosophy, or temporarily misplaced it (I hope).
