As per Vatican Internet Could Damage Spiritual Life

On 4 December 2008, the highest authority of Catholic religion in Vatican reminded us that our obsession to modern technology like internet and mobile phone potentially consumed most of our time so consequently we would not provide enough time for spiritual life.

Further in a Vatican Television interview, Pastor Federico Lombardi, Pope’s spoke man, said that without strong spiritual life, man would have a risk to be lost. He said in this age of mobile phone and internet, it is more difficult for us to protect interior aspect of our life and enter to moment of serenity. He said that the serenity is important for our soul. Lombardi also said that something big was threatening us. They who were not ready for the threat were pitiful persons.

It has been a long time since Vatican reminded us about the danger of modern life and the effort to fight it. Last month Pope Benedict XVI said that global financial crisis was the evidence that the wealth that consist of money and worldly success means nothing. Pope in the recent synod meeting said that the modern culture was damaging and dangerous.

Even though he said so Pope didn’t deny that technology had the big role to help human life. Pope himself used internet to send his message to young generation. In the World Youth Day Celebration in Sydney earlier this year, Pope sent meditation or daily inspiration through short message service to the young people. That event in Sydney also used digital prayer time. Even Vatican has made some online manuscripts, documents and ancient texts from Vatican Apostolic Library.

In my own humble opinion we must balance our life. Before using internet, people watched television for hours, so nothing actually different. We can use technology to enhance our spiritual life. We should use the modern technology wisely. Our spiritual growth needs strong commitment, regardless we have internet access or not.
