Celebrities and Hollywood has established themselves as a force in election ‘08
Barack Obama has been gathering campaign steam by collecting celebrity endorsements from the celebrity and Hollywood arenas. In the past, this has been a Clinton field of plenty to pick from. Hillary Clinton is not taking this invasion of her one time plentiful resource lightly. Unfortunately, for Senator Clinton expressing her displeasure may just expose her venerability, add strength to the Obama run and even increase the John Edwards credibility rating. All once again reinforcing that the role and influence of star power has become rooted in our country.
The center of attention so far this election
David Geffen one of the more curious lynchpins to be established in any election campaign has stepped forward to endorse Senator Barack Obama. Geffen’s backing will mean a strong voice in the gay community. What is even more curious is each of who are considered to be the three top democratic potentials, Obama, Clinton and Edwards have all been out spoken against gay marriage. The duplicity comes from their equally demonstrative support of civil unions and equal benefits. Seriously, who are they all kidding with this double speak. Amid all this political waffling, David Geffen leaves the Clinton camp to park himself firmly in the Obama campaign. He does so making comments that not only irritate Clinton but also bear open a major weakness, which may undermine her own campaign.
First there was Billy now there is Bubba
David Geffen’s points had an exposed nerve on Hillary Clinton. One set of comments he stated the obvious, “everyone in politics lies,” in reference to the Clintons he stressed,”they do it with such ease, it’s troubling.” Former President Bill Clinton cemented this viewpoint in the minds of most Americans when they had to endure the Lewinsky fiasco. Senator Clinton has to realize that the man who should have been her biggest asset will more than likely be the boulder around her neck. Jimmy Carter had brother Billy. Hillary Rodman Clinton has her hubby, Bubba.
The lunacy begins here
Hillary Clinton has asked her rival Barack Obama to apologize for Geffen’s remarks and give back his campaign donation. This must be some form of a “Hillary fit.” She is basically crying out “he’s mine, you can’t have him and I want him back.” Someone had better whisper in her ear, “Hil, your slip is showing.”
Barbra has yet to weight in
Streisand’s mouth is known for its singing voice and political opinions. I could be wrong but I envision her in the Edwards fold. That would serve to further dilute Clinton’s gay base. Tactically, I feel Clinton is better off to pursue the George Clooney contingent. The man is a womanizer who has garnered a lot of respect among his peers. Not to be redundant, but he would add a large female base to the Clinton campaign. George will also emphasize being a womanizer doesn’t make you all that bad. One of his favorite lines to throw out and people seem to swoon over. Bubba then can add his own form of comedy relief rather safely.
The Obama camp arisin’
There apparently is a wave of change concerning Obama. In a matter of weeks, he has gone from potential candidate to candidate to possible cult figure. Politically, he is now a danger to all his opposition. Let me change that to “a true threat” and not just an upstart mixing up the field. I also envision him silently eroding the John Edwards voting base. This would be much the same as Edwards did to Bush and Kerry last election. The fact that Clinton is sparring more openly and viciously with Obama says a lot. Hillary is an intelligent woman and knows where her greatest oppositions comes from. It says volumes that her attention is more on the person perceived to be the distant runner than on one of the front-runners.
A word about Joe Biden
You may not have a shot at the presidency, but you could be someone’s LBJ. I find it interesting that Biden and Edwards are silently stepping back on this one. Both of you remain focused on the big picture. At times silence can speak very loudly.
What could have been
As the trend to embrace celebrity opinion establishes itself as a force. One could only imagine what would have happened if Paul Reuben had not embarrassed himself and ruined his career. Some how I just vaguely visualize one of the candidates sitting in a darkened movie theatre with sticky floors holding a canister of Wet N’ Dri trying to get the Pee Herman endorsement.
