The NAACP announced on Monday a lawsuit against Tim Kaine, the governor of the state of Virginia. The lawsuit states that the state of Virginia has not prepared properly for the upcoming presidential election. As a resident of Virginia, I have to beg to differ, or at least I think.
The cities in my district (Hampton Roads) have extended hours for early voting and have even opened their doors on Saturdays to accommodate early voting. Northern Virginia (bordering D.C. and Maryland) has also made preparations for early voter turnout. Western Virginia may be a different story and to be honest, I’m not sure of the preparations for the upcoming presidential election in that area. Tim Kaine endorsed Barack Obama early in the Democratic primary. Kaine was actually the first governor to do so; and, if voting preparation is a concern for the NAACP, why a lawsuit?
Can the NAACP be going a bit too far this time? Can their actions actually have a reverse affect on the presidential election? Virginia is definitely in play for the Democratic ticket to turn the traditionally red state to blue. But the NAACP could actually be adding fuel to a fire that really does not need any additional steam.
If the NAACP is concerned with voting preparations they should first of all bring up the issue a little earlier than a week prior to the election. Secondly, why a lawsuit? Why not just meet with the governor or other state officials to correct and address any comments and concerns they may have. Lastly, what’s really the purpose? Is this just a ditch effort by the NAACP to become relevant in this historical election in view of the fact that the NAACP is losing its relevancy in the American political arena?
I could be a little too harsh but seeing and participating in what I know firsthand, the NAACP is going a little too far this time.
