Porn Industry Bailout?

After bailing out the banks and the “big 3″ automakers, the American government is being asked to bail out another industry. Two of the most recognizable figures in the porn industry are speaking out.
The economy has taken a huge down ward slide in the last several months. Apparently, so has the world’s sex drive if you listen to Joe Francis (”Girls Gone Wild”) and Larry Flynt (”Hustler”). They actually have the nerve to ask the government for a $5 billion bailout!
I agree that the porn industry is, unfortunately, one of the larger industries worldwide as anyone online can attest to. But do they really “deserve” the same sorts of economic recovery plans that more traditional industries got? If you put the morality issues aside and try to look at it non-judgementally, maybe they in fact do. The sex industry generates huge amounts of money each year which um, “employs” hundreds and thousands of people. Francis and Flynt claim that Adult DVD sales are down 22% from a year ago. That is a huge decline. However, I’m not sure that they are facing bankruptcy like some of the banks and auto makers were.
Not that I’m sure that the banks and auto makers deserved the bailout package that they received either. Please see my article Too Big to Fail? for further ramblings on this. My main point is that businesses need to be sustainable just as individuals do. If people are continually “bailed out” when their behavior leads them into a bad situation, they will never learn anything. That is, they will continue to behave badly in just the same way that children do. In order to learn their lesson, people (and businesses) need to be allowed to fail and face the consequences.
Larry Flynt, founder of “Hustler” magazine is quoted as saying that: “With all this economic misery and people losing all that money, sex is the farthest thing from their mind. It’s time for Congress to rejuvenate the sexual appetite of America.” His quotation is assuming that people need porn in able to have a sexual appetite.
Joe Francis, found of “Girls Gone Wild”, sees the porn industry as equal to the already bailed out industries and even bigger than them. He said: “Congress seems willing to help shore up our nation’s most important businesses; we feel we deserve the same consideration.” I’m not sure that the sex industry is one of the nation’s most important businesses. I know that they’re huge and they make tons of money but they do it, quite literally, off of the backs of other people.
I personally wouldn’t feel too sad if the porn industry stopped making movies all together. My guess is that people could “make do” with what has already been made. Joe Francis has stated that he will be going to D.C. himself to speak to congress about the idea of the bailout. I’m hoping that they think twice before handing over more tax payer money.

Well, I am sure that it sucks for them that they can not seem to keep up thier sales, but I say “let them fail”. I suspect that is one industry that may suffer setbacks, but will never go away. The internet would be a better place with weaker porn industry anyways.
I just hope that a downturn leads some of the spammers to go under. Hey, I can hope can’t I?
What an interesting topic to write about. I bet you are going to get all kinds of feedback on this one! LOL! Honestly, the whole idea of the porn industry even asking for money is comical. I guess you have to give them credit for trying. You never know unless you ask, as the saying goes. But, I think this country has far more important things to worry about and to put our money towards. Besides that, I really don’t think anything will stop people from having sex. Great job!
Excellent article! there are more worries in the world for the government to deal with than porn.Oh my, if they went under they may have to get a real job.
Interting Paula! For an industry that has been hush-hush by the government regarding regulations, laws, etc. It seems strange to me that now they are appealing to those who tried to pretend the porn industry even existed. From a many view points the porn industry is a big industry of ruined lives. You are right in saying buiness needs to be accountable for it’s actions. Small entrapreneurs could never expect such assistance.
I don’t think that the current economic crisis is the only factor of the decline of DVD sales in the porn industry, but all the free porn you can get around on the Internet.
It’s not like music or movies, where you can get more or less the same, but most people end up buying the CD or DVD and going to concerts and theathers.
When it comes to porn, I suppose most people think: If I can get it for free, even if it’s not great quality, who cares!
Good article!
What will they think of next? Hey, if the porn industry is getting a bailout, how about me? I could use a bailout at least as much as them. Great article, Paula!
I think there would be a riot here if our government even considered this! If the porn industry gets a handout maybe I am in the wrong profession. Let’s have handouts for starving writers. LOL
Interesting article about a polemic subject. With so many industries in trouble, I believe there are certainly other priorities.
Interesting! I read about this in the news and my immediate reaction was disbelief. They even dared to ask for a bailout!
This is a great article — interesting and informative. I had no idea this was going on (the industry asking for a bailout). Gee whiz, if the porn industry is struggling, should the government help fund it so that said industry can continue undermining and eroding the marriage vows? I don’t think the economic downturn is taking away anyone’s drive. If anything, you’d think it might increase. “Gosh honey, we can’t afford to go out to eat or go to the show or go shopping for anything; what else could we do tonight?” Anyway, very, uh, stimulating.
Nice feature. I think the likelihood of the porn industry getting a bailout is between nil and zilch.
Is this for real?
