Russian warship docked in San Francisco this week and Medvedev visits Silicon Valley, meets with Obama for a cheeseburger, then off to the G8.
This week, the flagship of the Russian Pacific fleet has been docked in San Francisco. The Varyag traveled for two weeks from Vladivostok to be displayed in SF. The ship is here to signify friendship between our countries. While Russian Admiral Vladimir Kastonov repeated that this was a friendly visit, it was also mentioned that this is a display of military power. And lets not forget that this ship is ARMED. Yes, that is correct. It has 16 cruise missiles, anti-aircraft missiles and a standard twin barrel gun in turret. This ship is currently in use as part of the active fleet, and that is why it is armed enough to blow a hole through the continent.
The reading material that I was able to find regarding this matter, was more than intriguing. It seems that whoever orchestrated this is trying to re-write history, in a way. This little visit from the Russians is supposed to commemorate Russia’s assistance to America in 1863 during the Civil War. During this time, Russia sent fleets to New York and San Francisco to show support for the Union. I’m not saying that this piece of history is fabricated, but it is certainly not what the American educational system focuses on. Lets just say that U.S. history books are chock full of Cold War data. I also remember reading quite a lot about Stalin. My parents and grandparents are also a wealth of information regarding the Cuban Missile Crisis and hiding under desks at school.
In related news, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev visited Silicon Valley yesterday, touring high tech companies, including Cisco. Today, he met with President Obama and had a cheeseburger. They shared fries (how cute). Medvedev will be attending the G8 summit tomorrow and then the G20, with other world leaders in Toronto, Canada.
I’m really not sure what to think about all of this. If I were Medvedev and I was attending the G20 with other world leaders, why would I dock one of my impressively armed warships in San Francisco? As an American citizen, I just don’t feel threatened by Russia, whatsoever. I feel much more threatened by my own government on any given day of the week. So, what gives? Just showing off toys? Hmmmm…Whatever the reason for all of this, I’m sure everything will be gravy, as long as Putin doesn’t come riding in, bare chested, on a horse (Putin on a horse pic).
