Elections.

So, tomorrow South Africans go to vote in the local elections. It is said that this is probably the most important election since the end of apartheid as it will truly reveal the direction in which this country is headed. Small factions of people, mostly in isolated areas are springing up and protesting against the vote. They are refusing to vote as they still do not have the necessary infrastructure, which they were promised, after so many years. Some have been waiting for running water, electricity, toilets or housing for as long as 17 years and state that they are now fed up. They are protesting publicly in the streets with shouting and marching. People die in the local squatter camps on a regular basis because of the unsafe conditions. Many children are burnt and maimed because of uncontrolled fires. Despite the government continuously showing statistics on their progress in these areas, one wonders if the unacceptable conditions that many South Africans are still living under will ever change.
