CIA director Michael Hayden says that the CIA hold Al Qaeda along with Pakistani tribal leader, Baitullah Mehsud, responsible for the assassination of Benazir Bhutto on December 27, 2007. CIA assessment of the crime mirrors the assessment of the Pakistani government.
Hayden says the killing was part of an organized campaign. Bhutto was shot seconds before a suicide bomber blew up. After a failed assassination attempt from a month earlier, it was clear from the very beginning that the second assassination erased any chance of failing.
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf’s government is a key ally in the war on terrorism. Musharraf called off the election for a new president that was due to be held the following week. Bhutto was running against Musharraf, which has led many to question whether Musharraf himself had anything to do with the assassination of Bhutto.
New elections have been set for February 18.
