A view on New Labour coming up to a recession.
Looking back from 1997 has Labour really changed the country for the better? It seems the Government started off with good intentions but through the years they seem to have stumbled across each hurdle not knowing where the finishing line is.
Many people believe it was the issue of the Iraq War which saw the collapse of ‘New Labour’. Tony Blair being a puppet on a string for George Bush was not at all pleasing to watch. It is true that employment did rise, streets became safer, hospitals better than before but the recession will soon see all this disappear. Twelve years have passed and Labour seem to have lost focus on what a Government is about; a democracy, a voice for the people. Maybe that’s why people have turned sour, as a nation we have said no to war, no to the ‘Postcode Lottery’ system, a no the Government seem to have interpreted as yes.
Maybe it’s time for someone else to take charge. There are two main options; Nick Clegg or David Cameron. I don’t take to people who criticise their own party members, this leaves us with Cameron. He seems to have won people over with his quick wit, smart appearance, strong ideas… but I’m not sure I would vote the Tories, a right-wing I am not. What I would like is the belief that Labour could somehow pick themselves up again, but the likelihood of that, I’m afraid to say is steering towards no.
I think these next few months will be a test for the Government; can Gordon Brown keep his cool? Or will the stress of the country’s recession on his shoulders cause him to collapse?
