Russia Says They Could Help Stop Bp Gulf Oil Spill, If Allowed

Once again, Russia claims to have the answers to our problems in the Gulf of Mexico. Nearly 3 months have passed since the BP leased, Deepwater Horizon, exploded and sank into the ocean. Due to the current operations…as I sit here and type this…the oil is freely flowing without any restrictions.

A captain for a Russian owned submersibles company told the BBC that if they were allowed to help, they could help stop the Macondo oil well from spewing. Anatoly Sagalevich, of Russia’s Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, owns this company. He claims there is still time to help the situation, if they were allowed to intervene.

The two Russian subs that could be useful in the Gulf, have been busy with exploration of the bottom of Lake Baikal, in Siberia. The subs (Mirs) have been looking for gas hydrates, to be used as an alternative fuel source. They are into their 3rd year of this exploration.

Sagalevich stated that he had informal discussions with BP representatives but that is basically where it ended. A BP representative stated that it had no formal discussions with Russia.

Sagalevich says that his Mirs are unique because of the way they work together and their ability to work with any other equipment. “There are only four vessels in the world that can go down to 6,000m – the Mirs, French Nautile and Japanese Shinkai. The Mirs are known to be the best, and we have a very experienced team of specialists,” he said.
