An article about Corazon Aquino’s battles.

After 1 year and four months of battle, Cory Aquino succumbed to cancer. Senator Noynoy Aquino announced to the media  that her mother died at exactly 3:18 in the morning, August 1, 2009 due to cardio-respiratory arrest.

Corazon Aquino or Cory as she is more popularly called is a significant historical and political figure in the Philippines. After losing her husband at the assasination of political adversaries, Cory’s life had never been the same. She was to continue the battle her husband had waged. She bravely and unselfishly heeded the people’s call for a change in leadership. It was not an easy battle with the country’s dictator, yet she was undaunted. The snap elections paved the way for her presidency and People Power I  (the genuine people power revolution) and Divine Intervention installed her to office.

When she took her oath, she revived democracy in the country which has long been suppressed by the claws and shadows of the dictator. She became a symbol of democracy and made the Philippines a new haven of democratic government. She was at a 1986 issue of Time Magazine and got nominated at the Nobel Peace Prize not as a President but as a woman who achieved an extraordinary feat.

Her administration was haunted by coup attempts, power problems, natural disasters, and CARP issues yet she did not yield to any of these. She remained strong and after serving for six years as the country’s chief executive she remained politically upright and morally upright. She gracefully bid farewell to the presidency upholding the spirit of democracy through peaceful turn over of the presidency unlike her predecessor. She truly exemplified what democracy is.

With her death, the Filipino nation is orphaned yet her spirit will always remain. It’s democracy. Even at her death, she thinks of the Philippines and its people. So, it’s payback time. Let Cory Aquino be the Philippine democracy the greatest battle she has ever won.
