Philippines — Senator Loren Legarda, October 23, announced her plans to run for the vice president position under the Nationalist People’s Coalition on the National Elections on 2010.
In her speech during a program launch at Rizal Park, Legarda said that she will pursue her plans to seek higher office in 2010.
Legarda cited the climate change as her primary concern. Over the years, she has been active in organizing several projects that deal with the environment.
Legarda is a former broadcaster of a local television network who enetered politics in 1998. She ran as the opposition’s bid for vice president in the 2004 elections but lost to fellow broadcaster Noli De Castro.
The senator assumed her post as a legislator in the 2007 senatorial elections gathering the highest number of votes, a feat she had also achieved in the 1998 elections.
Legarda is rumored to have Senator Francis Escudero as her running mate but not has not confirmed it until press time.
She is expected to butt heads in the vice prexy post with 2004 senatorial elections top notcher Mar Roxas and Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay.
Roxas will run under the Liberal Party ticket with Senator Benigno Aquino III as his running mate while Binay will have former president Joseph Estrada under the merged United Opposition and Partido ng Masang Pilipino party.
Meanwhile, the administration is now looking for a substitute after Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno’s backing out in the vice presidential race.
