According to Bloomberg, I have the breaking news about the devastating earth quake and the domino Tsunami that resulted as well.
Last night the Pacific Ocean was roaring outside my bedroom window, on the Oregon coast, that actually made me think Tsunami. Sure enough Bloomberg.com reported today that Indonesia was affected solidly by a 7.6 quake.
Two reporters for Bloomberg state the Samoan tsunami was a result of the Indonesian quake off he coast of Sumatra. An estimated 1000 people may have died with destruction of houses in the city of Padang according to a health ministry official, Rustam Pakaya.
Padang airport in Sumatra was closed so officials could access the damage caused by the quake. Telecommunication, transportation infrastructure and electrical connections were also greatly affected according to Antara, Indonesia’s State News Agency.
Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated a 5 foot wave was reported within about 20 minutes of the earthquake at Pago Pago. Still part of the Tsunami’s result has left many people missing. New Zealand schools are on vacation so some families are spending that time in southern Samoa, according to the Radio New Zealand official Ausegalia Mulipola.
Pacific tsunami monitoring system worked well, however Samoa being so close to the quake’s epicenter, left little time to ascend to higher ground. With the tsunami traveling equivalent to the speed of an airplane at 800 kilometers per hour, moving to safety is difficult according to Badaoui Rouhban, who is the director of the section for disaster reduction at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in Paris, France.

Very tragic indeed, which reminds me of the earthquake and tsunami I experienced as a child, which I have shared here.
