Could Taliban ever enter Buner, a town closer to Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan, without Pakistan knowing it?
It sounds ridiculous to imagine Pakistan would allow its enemies to enter Buner, a town closer to Islamabad and sit quietly for couple of days before they decide to act.
If you had visited Buner then you would know that Islamabad is just around hundred kilometers from Buner. To think that a platoon of gunmen enter so closer to the capital city of Pakistan without its permission, is just another joke fit for the breakfast table that would help you to push yourself into a good mood before you hurtle down to your office.
To come down to Buner without Pakistan knowing it, is hard to believe. Looking at the exploits of ISI who is probably one of the better intelligence agencies in the world, it’s impossible that ISI would not have known the intentions of Taliban’s adventure.
That leaves us with the option to believe that Pakistan allowed Taliban to enter Buner.
In other words, Pakistan laid the way for Taliban to enter Buner so that they could drive them away from Buner and show the world that they are fighting militancy in the country.
They wanted to make a statement to the world, to silence critics in the wake of recent Lahore attacks against the Sri Lankan cricket team. Driving Taliban out of Buner would certainly make their image better. There are enough reasons to believe Pakistan’s double sword attack.
Pakistan’s inability to act against Taliban in the swat valley episode had clearly showed the affinity Pakistan has for the Taliban. Allowing shariat law to function as a supreme law in the swat valley by Pakistan clearly shows Pakistan’s indulgence in Taliban’s affair. They did not want to annoy Taliban and cooperated willingly to impose Shariat in Swat valley.
How would anyone expect the same Taliban to venture out against Pakistan and jeopardize its relationship?
Pakistan had always supported Taliban even when they were entangled with Russians in the 80’s. They had a relationship with Taliban which goes beyond 2 decades, and they still have a very good understanding with them.
It was Pakistan who supported Taliban to over throw former Afghan president Nazibullah’s Government, after the Russians left Afghanistan, and there was no attempt to save Nazibullah when he was brutally executed on the streets of Kabul.
Pakistan also gave shelter to Mullah Omar, the one eyed Taliban chief, after Americans bombarded Taliban out of Afghanistan.
If Pakistan had been so supportive of Taliban in the past, how could Taliban ever think of revolting against Pakistan?
They are hiding in Pakistan with their permissions. There are enough reasons to believe that Taliban still has a very good relationship with Pakistan.
Pakistan had designs to allow Taliban to enter Buner, and driving them away is purely a political move which should never be taken seriously.
