Radiation in Delhi

Recently a massive earthquake hit japan .Its effect were tsunami and later radiation.
That was something beyond human control. But what happens when innocent people in city like New Delhi,India fall prey to radiation due to the sheer carelessness of those who pretend to show they are the best when it comes to education and knowledge.
I remember those science classes in school and college where we were given ample knowledge on radioactivity. There was a complete chapter with introduction, people who discovered it the phenomena ,uses and the chaper was closed by discussing “HARMFUL EFFECTS OF RADIATION”.
Radiation can be beneficial or deleterious to human race and the planet earth.Under controlled condition it has proved to be a boon to human race as it has many uses .It is used by hospitals as X-ray.treatment of cancer. It is used in communication where it is known as eletromagnetic radiation. It is also used in radio carbon dating etc etc.
But what happens when we are not able to control it ….it results in humungous destruction of material and organisms, anything that it penetrates. The recent example is Japan where people are living in fear day and night.
Similar incident took place in the capital of India Newdelhi .I know most of you would be flabbergasted by reading this but my friends its true ..a few people became victims of radiation because of sheer carelessness of a postgraduate chemistry department of an established college in delhi that sold a radioactvie metal to an innoent scrapdealer as it was lying unused for 25 years or so the metal was identified as cobalt-60.The ignorant man brought it for INR.1.5 lakh as he was told it was a precious metal and he could sell it at a much higher price.
The scrapdealer took the metal to his scrapyard where other workers at his yard dismantled the metal the scrapdealer himself kept a few peices of the metal in his wallet and kept the same wallet in his pocket .
very soon these people started complaining of pains and sickness Eight people were hospitalised and later one among them died .The scrapdealer himself received burns and injury on his left thigh and hip with the result that he is always in pain and his body has been scarred forever. The othes who were exposed to radition went back to their homes and can no longer live a normal life.
Even the doctors were mystified about the symptoms showed and only after some consultation with more experienced physicians did it come to light that the victims were exposed to harmful radiation.Till date these victims are suffering .
Though the incident is a year old but who knows when something like this happens again as no strict measures have been taken by the authorities about the safety of scrap yard workers .Luckily the local people did not come in contact with the metal .As in India the scrapdealers mostly move from locality to locality for buying the household scrap and its mostly a sack attached to a bycycle or an open rickshaw. My concern is what if that scrapdealer moved with cobalt-60 from thickly populated areas .Imagine the number of people who could have fallen victims to radiation.
