New Zealand, Brisbane.
A Brisbane City Council raid found 37 international students living in a suburban home. Now you’d ask yourself, “How on earth did they all fit in there?” Well, considering the house wasn’t anywhere the size of a mansion and just bigger than a hut, the students needed to improvise.
Those who slept inside, only a few slept on the beds. Most were on the floor, couches, chairs, tables, anything that goes! As the inside of the house filled up, the other half were provided makeshifts beds, to sleep in the garage and the final lot ended up spending the night in their very own portaloos, in the home garden.
The Brisbane City Council, pointed out that the backyard toilets caused sanitation issues. Also saying that sleeping in garages, was an illegal development. As a result, a new law has been set allowing only 5 unrelated people to share a home, down from 6.
Brisbane’s Deputy Mayor Graham Quirk has this to say, “”In many cases these are overseas students being charged top dollar to live in substandard accommodation with not enough toilets, or bedrooms. Students bring over a billion dollars to our annual economy, and they spend a lot of money to get here, yet some find themselves victims of poor housing and sanitation.”
