A tribute to the 209 lost in one of Australia’s worst “natural” disasters.

February 7 and the weeks beyond signalled the worst bushfires the state of Victoria and Australia had ever seen. 209 lives were reported to have been lost in the vicious fires, the most hard hit Victorian town being that of Kingslake where the all but the entire town was decimated by the raging inferno.

The arrests of two men and speculation of more to follow have sparked numerous discussions of arson and debates upon nature’s fury and that of man. Who could do such a thing?

In memory of those lives lost, this article takes you on a photographic journey of the devastation caused.

The vast expanse of Australia’s southern state of Victoria is bone dry and therefore the perfect breeding ground for hungry and vicious fires.

This satelite image shows the position of each fire and the great cloud of smoke created by them.

The Australian government has just announced that a national day of memorandum will be held each year on February 7 for the victims and survivors of the bushfires that ravaged Victoria, Australia.
