A tribute to the 209 lost in one of Australia’s worst “natural” disasters.
February 7 and the weeks beyond signalled the worst bushfires the state of Victoria and Australia had ever seen. 209 lives were reported to have been lost in the vicious fires, the most hard hit Victorian town being that of Kingslake where the all but the entire town was decimated by the raging inferno.
The arrests of two men and speculation of more to follow have sparked numerous discussions of arson and debates upon nature’s fury and that of man. Who could do such a thing?
In memory of those lives lost, this article takes you on a photographic journey of the devastation caused.

The raging torrent leaves nothing in its wake.

This photo was taken from the side of a Victorian highway just outside of the town of Kinglake. The force and fury is very evident.

The vast expanse of Australia’s southern state of Victoria is bone dry and therefore the perfect breeding ground for hungry and vicious fires.

This satelite image shows the position of each fire and the great cloud of smoke created by them.
Please view this video which gives a very real photographic account of the devastation caused.
The Australian government has just announced that a national day of memorandum will be held each year on February 7 for the victims and survivors of the bushfires that ravaged Victoria, Australia.

To think that this could have been caused by some careless idiot is just mind-boggling. I can’t even comprehend how someone can just blatantly cause such destruction. So many lives, and the natural surroundings, gone because of human carelessness. It’s sad.

I am so sorry for the lives lost in the fire. Such a tragedy.
Bush fire really is man made… let us remember that grass fires contribute a lot to global warming.
thanks for this information. it is a must read for everyone.
Sad to hear so many lives lost. Great tribute.
So sad.
It made my heart ached.
209 “HUMAN” lives.. undoubtedly thousands more in other animal lives.. how tragic.
oh and it would be bad of me to forget plant life too.
Excellent article.
People actually start the fires because they get a thrill out of seeing the destruction “their” fire leaves behind. A few years ago there was a push for the media to stop sensationalising the fires, but they’re so destructive and so many lives are affected, how can the media not report them in an emotive way? I am so sad for the people of Victoria, it’s just devastating. I’m also in silent shock at the thought of all the animals (wild and pets) trapped and killed in the fires, too.
Wow the fires really were so big, watching the film at how fast they actually move, it is a shocker.
I heard that they were having problems with new fires being lit? I hope that they do not have to face such tragedy again.
