Kings Cross, Sydney, greets a splash of Spring sumptuousness as locals awake to their trees dressed for the season.

“Art and About,” a festival of art upon the pavements, for Spring in Sydney, has splashed down! One art-project is the, “I Heart Kings Cross,” knitting-group that  has seen local knitting on every tree. What a curious thing took shape here over the last fortnight. It all began a few Sundays ago with a nest of likeminded souls and some pointy needles.

Method in their Madness

Sunday was the day those keen knitters met as puppies frolicked around them at the local farmers markets. “Fresh kale!” came the cry from the Chinese grocer as the pitter-patter of tiny clacking needles were turning out squares of vibrant vigor. Others, not in on it, thought a shell of mad people had formed. Why were they knitting squares so?

Not all they were making was square. Take this covered sculpture of tumbling lucky coins. It is already over two meters high, just near where the knitters had met those worshipful afternoons. This was their first, “target,” to wrap – notice the hurried purls? The large spaces meant that the round form of knitting was their entre statement in soft aquamarines and pearl.

Next, they could have taken a square not bigger than a hand, wrapping it around the post, at the lights. The, “Tweet-tweet a-tweetin’” of the crossing pad and arrow might have just fuzzed up the red, fluffy piece. I’m sure it was always like that but this makes a nice decoration of our rather dull crossing post.

Just across the zebra crossing someone cheeky crafted a glorious set of bosoms, for the post, opposite. A fuller set might have worked, but as said they were quite silly, so these make an  adorable statement against the clear Spring sky. Cute, hey?

Not to be outsmarted at decorating the functional, the next thing the group covered was this park bench. Imagine the work!  If you check closely  there is well over four square meters of rich, purple wool around this everyday thing. What a great city – providing locals with lovely, wooly  lounge chairs – for a moment at least.

In the trees above  are palms exploding with every tone imaginable. The dappled light casts a curious shade through the cooling vegetation. That these colours could save you a vacation to the distant  outback to be sure.  Just relax on your rich, purple park bench and drink in the Outback-style art high above in this copse.

Across the way some clever knitters in the, “I Heart Kings Cross,” knitting unit were taking their time. “How can we knit around the tree and include its’ forms?” They attained their goal with this gorgeous, form-fitted piece of haute co tour for arbor.

Blue Poles. Image DeVere

Uprights were simply perfect for the squares this knitting group made. These poles are evocative of totems in the Tiwi Islands bringing the sea and the desert home. Favourite colours for everyone were now.

DiscoDildo. Image DeVere

The cheeky knitters stopped at nothing to tease the Kings Cross locals with their fabulous, fun art.  This pecker adorns any ordinary post, and the Spring morning sun captures the little disco-ball! All over the place  mischievous attitudes abound.

Next to the dildo a dolly awaits. She looks a little bit sad, a touch rejected, but so delightful in her toplessness.  It is as if she were  put hurriedly there. Disco Dildo’s perfect match.

Safe. Image DeVere.

Cyclists were guaranteed their vehicles were safe… and cozy, too. The bright crimson, purple, light-blue and red, beside the iridescent-lime  of the mountain cycle is bright and quite  cheering.

Fine Tapestry. Image DeVere

The most glorious piece was on a plane-tree trunk, about a meter thick, simply screaming bright creativity. The design on this was the favourite; the perfect topping off.

“Art and About,” is an annual event staged by the Sydney City Council. “I Heart Kings Cross,” was a local venture that has brought exhilarating King Cross alive with one curious case of clever knitting. It will run for about a month.
