A family brewery on Cornwall is told by the Eurpoean union, "you’re beer is not a beer!" I say, fight the EU and lets help out this new enterprising buisness by buying thier beer by the box load!!!!

OK. I’ve not heard of Cornish Stingers until now. Nor did i know that there was such a thing as nettle beer. Apparently, its been around since the 1600s, when nettle were used to flavour ale before hops became widely available. It is far different from malted barley used in traditional beer, and because it was not in fashion, nettle beer was not considered when the Eu introduced its 1992 rules on taxing alcoholic drinks.

A big surprise for brewers Miles Lavers and Alice Rollinson, who have three young children! This sudden discovery has led tax officials to charge £10,000 in backdated tax duty, simply because Cornish Stingers does not contain malt

As its out of reach at the moment, I have to rely on George Arbuthnott’s description of the ale. “Its not dark. It has a light green hue and a gently sparkle. Tastes lemony, with a touch of wild flower meadow.” And I’m told its eight nettle to the bottle. Nice to know there is a use for these terrible stinging plants!!

I have to say, these Cornish folk are not alone in thier quest for Nettle beer; TV chef Hugh Furnly Whitingstall has made his own Nettle brew, but escaped Euro sanctions by adding Malt to his recipie.

A money raising program is a must. And a petition too! How dare a foreign power attack an independent business just when we need them the most! And a British one too! There is a great shortage of British based companies, along with our pride! Lets do what we can to save Cornish Stingers!
