Adlene Hicheur was a data analyst in a group at the European Organization for Nuclear Research(CERN), running an experiment called “LHC Beauty”.

He is accused of having links to a North African offshoot of al-Qaeda.

Monday, October 12th found him standing before a judge in Paris, after he made contact with members of the group.

Aldene Hicheur is a 32 year old French citizen and has worked since 2003, at the world’s largest particle accelerator, the Large Haldron Collider.

A particle accelerator speeds up charged particles such as protons and electrons.

The Large Haldron Collider can hurl protons and electrons in beams. It can send those beams almost as fast as the speed of light.

This particle collider is known for trying to recreate the conditions of the Big Bang.

It is located just outside Geneva, one hundred feet below the ground under the border between France and Switzerland.

Physicists from many different parts of the world meet there to study and conduct research.

Some scientists have expressed their reservations about the experiments, saying, as recently as last year that the experiments are risky and could create black holes which absorb physical matter.

Mr. Hicheur’s coworkers at CERN say there is nothing there that could be used for building a nuclear bomb and that he did not have security clearance for high risk areas.

Mr. Hicheur is said to have acknowledged corresponding online with al-Qaeda in the Maghreb.

The North African branch of al-Qaeda aims to establish an Islamist state in Algeria.
