According to a research led by the European Commission, prices of broadband connections are decreasing compared to the prices in 2008.

Especially the average price of a broadband connection between two and four Mbps decreased. Users of these broadband connections now have to pay approximately thirty-seven euros a month. That’s twenty-nine percent cheaper than the price in 2008. Also, the price of connections between one and two Mbps decreased tremendously by nineteen percent, equalling a total price of thirty-one euros a month.

Fast broadband connections became cheaper too, but the price only decreased by four percent, equalling a total price of approximately forty-seven euros a month. Strange enough but still true: the price of slower connections increased! The price of connections with a speed ranging from 144 to 512 Kbps increased by seven percent, equalling a total price of thirty euros a month.

These are the average prices of internet connections in European countries. Commissioner Viviane Reding is worrying about the huge difference in prices between the different member states. For example, the price for a broadband connection in a new member state is alot higher than the price in other member states. Nonetheless, Reding is happy with the results of the research: “Most European people can connect to the net using a connection with the speed of two Mbps or higher, for a low price.”
