At least ten people died in a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck south-eastern Spain Wednesday, causing panic in the town of Lorca (near Murcia ), after several buildings collapsed, reports AFP.quake, which felt in Madrid, about 350 kilometers northwest was recorded at 18.47 local time (19.47, GMT). The earthquake occurred in an area less exposed to seismic risk, according to Reuters. Lorca town dates from the Bronze Age, the village center consisting of narrow streets and old buildings.

The government announced Wednesday evening that ten people were killed.Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, immediately ordered the sending of a military intervention units to participate in rescue operations.

The Ministry has reported major damage. Immediately after the earthquake, people gathered in the street, unknowingly deocamadata, where to spend the night, local television announced, quoted by AFP. Patients from a local hospital were evacuated.

10,000 people, according to local authorities, were evacuated, and public services have been mobilized to distribute food. The city has 92,700 inhabitants and is located 70 km south-west of Murcia.

The earthquake was felt in Almeria, Granada, Jaen, Malaga and Sevilla in Andalusia, in the south.

The last earthquake quake felt in Spain, dates from February 28, 1969, when an earthquake with epicenter in the Atlantic Ocean has killed 19 people in several countries in the region, including Spain.

Wednesday’s quake also produced the most number of victims recorded in Spain, the earthquake in April 1956, when the balance was 12 dead and 70 wounded in several villages near Granada, Andalucia.
