This is the latest news from the UK, where a heavy snow has hit London and the south east for the first time in 18 years.

London and the South East of England has been hit by one of the heaviest snow for the time in eighteen years at the weekend. It started in the evening on Sunday and continued through the night until Monday afternoon. The impact of the snow has been catastrophic as it caused million of commuters’ disruption. London transport, motorways, railways services, and buses have been one of the worst affected.  It was reported that London buses stopped working all day due to the fear of accident and heavy snow.

Most banks, businesses and schools were shut and it has cost the UK economy about £1.3 billion. “London’s public transport system buckled under the stress, with all but a handful of bus routes cancelled today and 10 of the 11 underground lines either completely or partly suspended.” Snow Brings Britain Travel Chaos

World’s busiest International airport Heathrow has cancelled several of its fights leaving thousands of passengers stranded. Heathrow is not the only London airport that has cancelled fights, London City Airport, Gatwick and Stranded have also cancelled several of their flights. So far the snow has cost the lives of two brothers.

The impact of the snow has been on London hospitals as the guardian reported on Monday that London Ambulance Service responded to “650 calls between midnight and 7am”. “The London Ambulance Service said it was responding only to “life-threatening” emergency calls because it was under pressure and had received more than 650 calls between midnight and 7am.”  London Stock Market felt the shock of the snow and many traders worked for few hours and headed home early due to the fear of snow on Monday.

According to some newspaper reports the snow settled to a depth of 17 to 25cm. According to the London paper London this is deepest snow since 1964.  “Millions of commuters were left stranded as up to 7in (17.5cm) of snow fell in just a few hours, and with more snow on the way, the capital will receive its deepest covering since 1964”. It is expected that the weather is going to be even worse as the snow continues through Monday night to Tuesday morning and temperatures reaches to -2C. According to London paper the Met office has warned that there will be showers coming from the North Sea.
