A large earthquake has hit Belize, Honduras.
Today, a large 7.1 magnitude, hit Honduras. The epicentre was about 80 miles north of the country but was very strong.
Although no deaths or serious injuries have been reported, many people have been shaken up, having to run out of their tiny shacks in just their pyjamas! The disaster, struck at 3:24 am on thursday 28th may (8am GMT)
Ana Maria Rivera, a talker for Honduras’ Permanent Emergency Commission, said it was felt all across Honduras’ Caribbean coast.
“People ran from their homes in alarm,” she said. “The quake was felt in almost the entire country.”
Other people, like firefighters, have said that houses collapsed, as well as a stadium near the capital.
In Belize, people fled from their homes as cups and framed pictures fell off of shelves. At least five wooden houses on stilts collapsed in three towns and a water tower toppled in the town of Independence, local officials said. Electricity was out all the way to the Mexican border!
“I urge you not to panic, but to remain calm,” National Emergency Minister Melvin Hulse said on the radio. “Your government is monitoring the situation and will be keeping you informed.”
Owners of hotels have complained of damage as well, but not their guests.
No tsunami has been reported, and has been discontinued.
