Argentina has officially become the first country in Latin America to legalize gay marriage. The legislation passed with 33 votes to 27 and was backed by President Christina Fernandez.

Several gay marriages have taken place recently in Argentina, but some have been annulled by the Supreme Court which has led to legal controversies.

Argentina’s capital was the first city to legalize same-sex unions and is currently considered a widely gay friendly location. Same sex unions are also legal in Uruguay and some states in Brazil and Mexico.
