The prosecutor in Vienna has started an investigation against a young Austrian who is suspected to be a senior member of Al Qaeda, according to a report in the Sunday edition (10/07/2011), Austrian Die Presse.

“The suspect, known as Driss, is expected to lead a rebel group from Austria in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border,” the report said, citing a specialist on terrorist groups the United States, Paul Cruickshank.

Austrian intelligence agents arrested “Driss” in 2005 and believed he had become a close ally of Saleh al-Somali, which is one of the most senior aide of Al Qaeda before he was killed by a U.S. spy plane in 2009.

“Driss known to have converted to Islam and was born in the Austrian capital in 1983,” the newspaper said.
