Everyone was surprised that a small and "unknown" country like Qatar will present the FIFA Soccer World Cup in 2022. If you are interested in Qatar, you will find some useful information here.
The country
Qatar – also known as State of Qatar or Dawlat Qatar – is an Arabic country. It is an emirate in the Middle East, located on the small Qatar Peninsula in the northeast of the bigger Arabian Peninsula.
Saudi Arabia is in the south, the rest is surrounded by the Persian Gulf.

Qatar got rich because of oil and gas, it has the third largest gas reserves in the world.
As an absolute monarchy, Qatar is ruled by the royal al-Thani family since the 19th century.
The predominant religion in Qatar is Islam, almost 80% of the population are muslims.
Soccer / Football
Soccer (or Football) ist THE most popular sport in Qatar followed by Cricket. In 1981, the National Under 20 Football Team finished the FIFA World Youth Championship second with a 4 – 0 defeat, beaten only by Germany.
Qatar has won the bid for the FIFA World Cup in 2022 and has to prepare itself for this event. Sheik Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani will do a 50 billion dollar investment! He is planning to build stadiums, hotels, sanitary facilities, restaurants, security and luxury. He will push the country into “modern times” and visitors shall have a great experience in Qatar in 2022.
Overall, they will build 12 new stadiums with the latest technology. Solar energy will run the air condition to cool down the stadiums to “European” temperatures. Definitely needed with local temperatures reaching 50°C!

After the World Cup, the Sheik wants all stadiums to be disassembled and donated them to developing countries. 12 stadiums will be rearranged to 22 arenas for up to 15,000 seats.
Let’s hope that they will keep their promises. It definitely sounds great – no doubt.
And let’s have a great World Cup in 2022. See you in Qatar!
