In the Israeli news this week is the case of a religious 17 year old who wanted to watch T.V. for the first time, but instead was allegedly raped.

This week in Israel three young men were detained, accused of allegedly raping a young girl who went to a hotel room with them to see T.V. for the first time.

In June 2008 a17 year old Haradi (orthodox Jewish) Israeli girl took a lift from Bnei Brak ( a religious city just outside of Tel Aviv) to Elad (a settlement in the Shomron area) together with three young men around 19 years old from Bnei Brak. She knew one of the young men previously, and they got talking during the ride, she exchanged telephone numbers with the young man.

Some time soon after that the two spoke on the phone, and during the conversation the young girl confided that she would like to see television for the first time, as in her ultra orthodox home there was no T.V. The young man offered to help her accomplish this, and to take her to a Tel Aviv hotel where she could at last see T.V. for the first time.

The two planned to meet and on the appointed day she joined him at a Tel Aviv hotel where he had invited the other two friends of his who had been in the car when they had exchanged phone numbers. She never did get to see T.V., as once in the hotel room the three youths allegedly held her by force, raped and sexually abused her.

After the alleged rape the mental state of the girl caused her to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital. It was several months later before the girl was in a mental state to give further details about the incident, and the first names of the young men. After further investigation the Israeli police questioned the three men. At first they denied involvement in the incident but under interrogation they admitted their involvement in the event.

When brought face to face with the alleged rape victim one of the young men said to her: “Since it happened I pray and read psalms everyday for you.”

The Israeli courts have detained the three accused men until Friday when the case will be dealt with further.
