Many people don’t read newspapers anymore, they prefer to get them digitally. Most of the major newspapers and new organizations already have Apple iPad apps available. Here are six apps that I think are indispensable.

While I still read the local newspaper every day in paper format, I also like to read a lot of newspapers and news sources from around the world on my iPad daily. The apps mentioned below are ones that I have on my iPad and which I look at practically every day. I make no apology that they are mostly left-leaning or perceived as left-leaning. If you are not happy with these just search under newspaper or news in the app store.

AP News

The Associated Press app features the top news of the day. Many newspapers throughout the world depend on AP News to get stories to publish. It also features sports, entertainment, US and World news, business news, technology, photographs and video. It can be customized to your liking. You can also choose to get local news stories. It also gives you the time and your local weather. It is free to download onto your iPad.

New York Times

The New York Times app will be free until January. This app reprints all the news that is available on the New York Times website and the print newspaper. All sections of the paper are available, even the obituaries. The layout is very fresh and clean; it looks like a print newspaper.

Slate

Slate was one of the first sites I read regularly when I discovered the Internet. It offers news articles, videos, blogs and podcasts of all kind. It is a free download. There is some advertising but it is at the bottom of the app.

HuffPost

The Huffington Post is the granddaddy (grandmother?) of all blogs. It is highly successful and is a place that many go to for news. Many well-known political figures, business leaders and celebrities post blogs on this site. The Huffington Post is also good at reporting news that is currently happening. It is free to download to your iPad.

Globe and Mail

The Globe and Mail is the national newspaper of Canada. The app features most of the news you will find in the print version. It features such sections as national and world news, business and technology news, politics, arts, and books. It is free.

NPR

The National Public Radio app features excerpts and articles presented on air. It also allows you to listen to live streaming broadcasts and podcasts. When you first open the app you see news, arts & life and music stories. But it also features topics such as digital life, performing arts food, movies, and games. It has a very large music section. There is no charge for this app.
