U.S. Rep. Willian Jefferson’s freezer was found to have aluminum foil wrapped packs of money stashed in with the food.

Do you keep a freezer full of cash? Neither do I but apparently U.S Rep William Jefferson does that very strange thing. After serving nine terms in office, it seems the Louisiana democrat is best known for keeping packets of money wrapped in aluminum foil in his freezer. A jury will decide if he was using his freezer as a bank or if the money came from a scheme gone wrong that was planned to bribe the vice president of Nigeria.

Federal officers collected from Jefferson’s home in 2005, emails, documents, faxes, and conversations with a FBI agent who wore a recording devise. Lori Mody who participated in the sting handed Jefferson $100,000 which he agreed to give to the Nigerian vice president Atiku Abubakur as a bribe to facilitate a business deal. Most of these marked bills were found in his freezer.

It is alleged that he received thousands of dollars as kick-backs out of companies to arrange deals abroad and promoting business in which he would profit from ventures set up in Africa. 94 pages of bribery schemes include telecommunication deals in Nigeria, oil concessions in Equatorial Guinea and waste recycling systems in Nigeria. Jefferson lawyer says these ventures were personal ventures and were not associated with his office as U.S.Representative. Judge T.S. Elliot III denied the motion and said there is enough evidence to bring Jefferson to trial and let the jury decide if bribes were accepted.

Harry Rosenberg, former U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana, said that is one of the core issues to the case. Over the next few weeks the question of why the money was in the freezer may be explained.

“That’s the zinger,” Rosenberg said of the cash. “It’s been the source of jokes, questions, and a lot of head scratching.”
