The prom election with a different outcome.
Recently, at a high school in Los Angeles, there was a unique election at the prom. Whereas, at most proms, a king and queen are elected, this time the queen was a male student. What? A male as a queen, how did this happen? Well, the male, is an “openly gay student”. And felt that queen was more fitting for him than king. He said that the reason that he ran for prom queen was because the flyers did not say that the queen had to be a female.
Since when do we have to spell out the fact that a queen is supposed to be female? For countless centuries, a queen has been a distinction of royalty for the highest woman in a country. The Queen of England is a woman. So was Mary Queen of Scots and Cleopatra Queen of the Nile. That has not changed. Terms like queen and king have always been gender specific. They are distinctions that are necessary in any society.
How is it that, he was elected? Well there are those that say it was because he gave a speech that won people over. But the reality of the situation is this, he only won because of the sympathy vote factor. People voted for him because they wanted to make sure that he got at least one vote. But when this method is used during a secret ballot, there is no way to know who is voting for the outcast. Thus, that person ends up getting the majority of the votes.
Should he have won? No. But not only that, he should not have been allowed to run in the first place. Clearly, allowing him to do so was only a stunt. One that was inspired by those seeking acceptance. Events like this should not be allowed to occur again. Perhaps, it is time that we start making such distinctions, so if nothing else, we can avoid future media circuses.
