Shocking new information…
John Kessler is a chemical oceanographer at the College of Geosciences, at Texas A&M University. He is analyzing methane levels near the BP Deepwater Horizon site in the Gulf of Mexico. The results are shocking, startling and leaving scientists questioning, just what exactly is going on.
Kessler and his colleagues were able to take a 10 day cruise of the Gulf, thanks to the National Science Foundation Rapid Response grant program. The cruise began June 11th and ended June 21st. Information was collected from nearly 1 million data points. The area assessed was between 500 meters and 7 miles from the Deepwater Horizon disaster site in the Gulf. Kessler and his colleagues have been studying the data collected at a shore based lab.
Initial results are not good. Kessler says that methane levels are being detected at anywhere from 10000 to 1 million times higher than the natural and normally occurring levels. Methane leaks can be a natural occurrence. But, as Kessler says, they also indicate rapid climate change…
Another interesting find by Kessler’s group…depleted oxygen levels in some parts of the Gulf, affected by this spill. In some cases, the depletion is as much as 30 percent.
In my opinion, in relation to the BP Deepwater Horizon and the current information available about the leak…this could all be leading up to a huge problem and maybe even an understanding of the huge problem we face. There is a lot of chatter right now about the seabed “seeping” and the concerns of methane related to this disaster, are being raised by more than a few organizations, scientists and people. The earth is quite capable of producing devastating scenarios with methane. It certainly can’t help that we may have just provoked something similar, with the Deepwater Horizon disaster.
