Dominic Orlando, Writer on ‘Mindhunter,’ ‘The OA’ and ‘Them,’ Dies at 57

Dominic Orlando, a dramatist transformed television writer-producer who dealt with the shows Nightflyers, Mindhunter, The OA and Them, passed away Nov. 17 in Washington of problems from cancer, a CAA agent announced. He was 57.

Born in Brooklyn on Christmas Day in 1963, Orlando co-founded the New York-based No Pants Theater Company, whose goal was to return cinema “to its initial role as an area where culture challenges its spiritual self,” in 1992.

While on Jerome and McKnight fellowships at the Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis, he assisted launch one more cinema firm, the Workhaus Collective, prior to relocating to Los Angeles to seek an occupation in tv.

A two-time WGA candidate, Orlando added to 10 episodes of the Netflix thriller The OA throughout its 2 seasons in 2016 and 2019; wrote an episode of David Fincher’s Mindhunter at Netflix in 2017; generated 6 installations in 2018 of Syfy’s Nightflyers, based upon the work of George R.R. Martin; and wrote 3 episodes of the Amazon series Them this year.

Most lately, he acted as an author and exec producer on the honest series Outer Range at Amazon and Retreat at FX.

Survivors include his mother, Lillian; bros John and Steven; and sister-in-law Sara.

Donations in his memory can be made to the Dominic Orlando Fund, produced by close friends and the Playwrights’ Center, to sustain authors.

” He was the individual every person intended to rest beside at Thanksgiving, at the breakfasts in Minneapolis and the yard bbqs in L.A.,” his family stated in a declaration. “He was the loudest voice, suggesting, speaking, mentioning his company point of view and yet still, in some way, he constantly took care of to be an understanding and passionate audience. A coach, pal and a deeply charitable spirit, he invested his life structure social circles the way he constructed tales, and he was the heart of every circle.”
